Michelle Loses Her Purse

I see Michelle Obama in a kitchen. She has put her wallet or purse in a kitchen drawer but now as she is looking for it, it is gone. The scene shifts to an auditorium-like classroom. I’m observing as if from “above”. Obama is sitting in the audience but the speaker is addressing him. I believe the topic is energy related…maybe oil. Obama is defending his position on the subject but it is not being received well. The group is very critical of him.

She had this to say about her dream’s personal and political context:

“I had the dream on January 3rd. I had not been following his activities very closely but when I shared the dream, a friend told me he was in Copenhagen at an energy summit and the US was being criticized for not committing to a better plan to decrease our need for traditional energy sources. The media did not follow this event very closely at all. But the US was supposedly only committing to a decrease of 4% dependency on traditional energy sources. Other countries were committing to a much higher percentaged decrease. So Obama was being criticized, and if true, then rightly so. We need to look at alternative energy sources very seriously.

“I love Obama and voted for him. I believe he truly wants to make a difference and create positive changes. However, with our current system for policy making, and the way bills get tacked onto other bills until you hardly recognize the initial bill in the first place, Obama has a hard road to go. Certainly he inherited a mess….something people like to ‘forget.’ He inspires me and I feel his heart is in the right place.”

Overall, the dreamer said she felt the dream was helping her process the rising negativity and criticism being directed toward Obama. She fears Michelle, too, is in danger of losing something valuable, i.e. her personal identity.

Taking a third-person observer’s perspective in a dream is infrequent, but when it occurs it can perhaps signal a degree of “higher” awareness and self-reflective consciousness in relation to the contents of the dream. With this dream, it might correspond to the increasing complexity of the dreamer’s waking attitude toward Obama.

A Golden, Angelic Light

This was a fly-on-the-wall type of dream, where I was only an observer. It was very short and very intense, like a snapshot burned on my mind. President and Mrs. Obama were standing in the Oval Office, standing on the carpet with the eagle emblem on it, facing each other and smiling. They weren’t embracing, but were holding onto each other’s elbows. They were so happy — and they were glowing with a golden, angelic light. It was a very powerful image.

She explains: “I was telling my husband about this dream, and he said he also has dreamed of Barack Obama recently. Pretty amazing, considering we are a middle-aged white couple who voted for President Obama, but we did not attribute any angelic or metaphysical meaning to him occupying the White House (at least not consciously) … I have no idea what this means or why I dreamed it — but after I heard about your website, I thought what the heck, I’ll share it.”

Of all the Obama dreams we have gathered with mystical or spiritually meaningful qualities, this one has perhaps the most classical symbolic expression of what Obama’s rise to the Presidency has meant to his followers. The “golden, angelic light” connects the dream to mystical visions and Christian iconography, while the central position (on the eagle-emblem carpet) in the Oval Office suggests a mandala, i.e. an archetypal image of wholeness. As shown by many other dreams, Michelle Obama figures prominently as a vital companion of Barack’s and a powerful woman in her own right. In this dream their bond takes on aspects of a sacred marriage, or heiros gamos, which symbolizes cosmic union and harmony.

Such is the weight of idealization Obama has carried through his first year in office.

Michelle Gives Me a Dirty Look

I was going to a retreat center in the mountains to do a mini-workshop with a shaman. I arrived late and walked out of the lodge to find the group. I walked down the path in the snow, and caught the last of the “ritual” with the (Inuit?) shaman sitting by the fire, doing some sort of blessing. Then it was over. Heading back, I found myself walking with Barack. I somehow knew him on a personal level, and we chatted about how the campaign was going, how he was holding up, etc. It felt good to see him, like seeing an old friend. We went into the lodge together, finishing our conversation. Michelle saw us walk in and gave me a dirty look. I remember feeling annoyed because Barack and I were just friends and she knew that.

The mystical intimacy many people feel toward Obama makes some of them wonder, unconsciously at least, if there’s a sexual dimension to this attraction.

People’s dreams of Bill Clinton during the 1990’s included numerous instances of flirting, romance, and sexual activity (a theme that appeared well before the Monica Lewinsky scandal).

It’s impossible to reach certain conclusions with such limited data, but people’s dreams of Barack Obama in the last two years seem to have a lower frequency of overtly sexual behavior compared to people’s dreams of President Clinton.

We have gathered several sexual dreams about Obama, to be posted in coming weeks. But as the dreamer points out, the attraction for many people is not romantic but something deeper and stronger. Seeing Obama is “like seeing an old friend.”
