I am attending the Inauguration of Barack Obama, but I am in a room reserved for children–babysitting. I see children all around, playing quietly. I am not really engaged with the children; I am watching them play. In walks Obama. Everyone is surprised. He is wearing blue jeans and looks very handsome. He walks around, touching the children, talking to people casually, smiling, relaxed, happy. He has an aura about him, but is also very regular. The other workers scatter frantically. They change into glittery gowns to reflect the new president’s coolness. I watch all of the scurrying around and wonder, “Should I change, too?” I walk into the ballroom, where the ball will be held and decide that whatever I have on will be okay for the new president.

From a 50-year old female college professor in California.

The dreamer said she felt “thrilled” by the dream, which occurred the night of the Inauguration. “I never have dreams of political figures. I have been recording my dreams for two decades, and simply do not dream of politicians, although I vote regularly and engage politically occasionally. I was very excited by this dream. It was quite vivid and reflects what I think about him–that he is both extraordinary, but also able to connect with regular people.”

This dream, with its very positive portrayal of Obama mirroring the political views of the dreamer, bears a strong similarity to the previously posted dream. For these two liberal college professors, their dreams provide a screen onto which they project their hopes and ideals for Obama’s presidency.

The phrase “Should I change , too?” evokes metaphorical possibilities beyond a physical change of clothing. It could be a personal metaphor, in which Obama’s political mantra of “change” symbolizes the dreamer’s need to change (or not change) something in her private waking life.

It could also be interpreted as a broader cultural metaphor, in which the new President’s revolutionary appeal is in danger of becoming merely a change in style, a passing fad of “glittery coolness.” In this sense the dream speaks to the collective concern about what exactly Obama means when he calls for calls for everyone to embrace change and transformation.
